Women's Study
Rebirth in the context of Buddhism
On Thursday evenings over the summer, as part of the women's+ Dharma night. Both existing Thursday study groups and any casual summer attendees are welcome to drop in (women+ only). No preparation required, just an openness to the mysteries of life! We'll be exploring this light theme:
What is life and death?
What does Buddhism teach about rebirth?
And what evidence is there for or against it?
More importantly, what does the possibility of rebirth mean about the nature of mind and the relationship between mind and matter?
How can it shape our ethical choices and practice in general?
We'll be using the Pali Canon, the Tibetan Book of the Dead, modern research and other sources.
Each evening will start with meditation, followed by study and discussion.
Dates:
12 & 19 December 2024
2, 9, 16, 23 & 30 January 2025
7:00 - 9:15 pm
We hope to see you there!
If you are a woman* who has some familiarity with the Dharma and meditation from attending another class at the Sydney Buddhist Centre or coming on one of our retreats, and you are feeling curious about taking your Dharma practice deeper, this group is for you! Each evening will include meditation, tea break, and dharma study.
The night will run on a “drop in” by donation basis, but to get the most out of the experience, we encourage you to come to as many weeks as you can.
* anyone who identifies as a woman.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to book?
This is a drop in class so no need to book, though to get the most our out of the study we recommend attending for as many of the 8 nights as possible.
Can I come just for the meditation, or just for the dharma session?
It is best to stay for the whole evening.
Do I need to be a Buddhist or have practiced meditation before?
The class is most suitable for those who have attended our centre or retreats before, and have some knowledge of Buddhism and the meditations we teach.
How much does the class cost?
We don't charge a fixed price for our classes but instead invite you to make a donation to the centre to help us cover our running costs.
A donation of $10-20 would help us to cover our costs, but everyone is equally welcome, even if you cannot give anything at all.
